Vielsalm sits in the Ardennes, on the Salm river, and is best known as the self-proclaimed "capital" of the Macralia witch-cult carnival, a folkloric August festival with bonfires and broom-riding processions that draws far more attention than the town's actual size would suggest. Otherwise this is quiet, wooded Belgium: good walking and cycling country, close to the Baraque de Fraiture ridge and within reach of Vielsalm's more famous neighbour, La Roche-en-Ardenne, for day trips.
Be honest: outside the festival and the hiking season there isn't much to hold a visitor for more than a night or two, and the town itself is modest rather than picturesque. With only five hotels listed here, choice is limited, so book ahead if you're coming for Macralia weekend or during peak autumn walking season, when rooms fill fast. Stay centrally near the town itself if you want easy access to trails and the river, since anywhere outside Vielsalm means driving for dinner.
