Vielsalm sits in the Ardennes, on the Salm river, and is best known as the self-proclaimed "capital" of the Macralia witch-cult carnival, a folkloric August festival with bonfires and broom-riding processions that draws far more attention than the town's actual size would suggest. Otherwise this is quiet, wooded Belgium: good walking and cycling country, close to the Baraque de Fraiture ridge and within reach of Vielsalm's more famous neighbour, La Roche-en-Ardenne, for day trips.

Be honest: outside the festival and the hiking season there isn't much to hold a visitor for more than a night or two, and the town itself is modest rather than picturesque.
