Staying in Zoetermeer
Zoetermeer is a planned new town, a small village that was deliberately expanded from the nineteen-sixties onward to house overspill from neighbouring The Hague, and it still feels like it. Its districts were laid out in phases around tram lines, green belts and shopping centres, which makes it orderly, family-friendly and easy to navigate. Its best-known attraction is SnowWorld, one of Europe's largest indoor ski slopes, and the Stadshart is a major regional shopping centre.
Be honest: there is very little historic character here, evenings are quiet, and most visitors come for business, family or the convenience of cheaper beds near The Hague rather than for the town itself. That convenience is real, though. RandstadRail trams run straight into The Hague, trains connect towards Rotterdam Centraal, and Rotterdam The Hague Airport is a short drive away. With only a handful of hotels, choice is limited, so stay near the Stadshart and Centrum-West station for the easiest transport links, shops and restaurants.
