Hotels near Mains Castle

Stone rises in a tall, compact block in East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, its outline set against the open Scottish sky. Mains Castle is a tower house, the compact and defensible kind of home built by Scottish landed families, and it is long associated with the Lindsays of Dunrod. Its listing as a category A building marks it in Scotland as a structure of national importance, and its solid, upright form speaks plainly of the defensive homes of its kind. No public opening hours are recorded, so plan to admire the tower from outside rather than expect a tour.
