History
The Braemar Gathering's roots are said to reach back almost a thousand years, to a hill race up Creag Choinnich that King Malcolm III supposedly held near Braemar to find the fastest man in the district to act as his royal messenger — one of the old contests of strength and speed said to have inspired Scotland's Highland Games tradition.
The modern Gathering is more recent: the Braemar Highland Society was formed in 1815, and the first games with cash prizes were held in 1832. Its defining feature arrived in 1848, when Queen Victoria attended for the first time, at nearby Invercauld, beginning an unbroken royal association — the Society became 'Royal' in 1866, and the reigning monarch has been its patron and Chieftain ever since, a tradition King Charles III continues today.
Records & quirks
- Geoff Capes set a world-record Braemar Stone put in 1981, throwing the 20lb stone 17.37m (57ft).
- Creag Choinnich's hill race is said to date to 1064 — one of Scotland's oldest surviving races.
- The Gathering now draws around 16,000 spectators a year, making it Scotland's best-attended Highland games.
