About Berlin Marathon 2026
Runners take to the streets for one of the flat, fast courses on the marathon calendar, the kind of route that draws serious times as well as first-timers chasing a personal best. Bands and drum lines set up along the route, and the closer you get to the finish, the thicker the noise gets. For spectators, it's a day of dashing between vantage points to catch a runner twice before the line.
Where to stay nearby
Berlin itself is the obvious base, just 3km from the finish area and with around 300 hotels to choose from, putting you within easy reach of both the start and the crowds lining the route. Staying central also means you can watch the race at one point and still get across the city in time to see the same runner further along the course. Schönefeld, about 16km out, is a smaller alternative with a handful of hotels, useful if you're arriving by air or the city is booked up, though you'll want to plan your journey into town in good time on race day.
Berlin — about 3 km away
Berlin itself surrounds the venue, with central neighbourhoods like Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, and Kreuzberg within walking distance or a short journey. History
The BMW Berlin Marathon, first run in 1974, is one of the seven Abbott World Marathon Majors and the fastest big-city marathon on earth: its flat, wide and largely straight course through the German capital has hosted an extraordinary run of world records. Eliud Kipchoge lowered the men's world record here in both 2018 and 2022, and in 2023 Tigist Assefa set a women's world best on these roads.
The race starts and finishes in the central Mitte district, looping from the Straße des 17. Juni beside the Reichstag out through the city and back to a finish beneath the Brandenburg Gate — one of the sport's iconic sights. Held on the last Sunday of September, when the weather is typically cool and calm, it draws tens of thousands of runners and huge, good-natured crowds.
There is no race-day number collection, so plan to visit the expo in the days beforehand, and base yourself near the Tiergarten for a short walk to the start.
