History

Seattle joined the NFL as an expansion franchise in 1976, the name chosen by fan vote for a Pacific Northwest seabird. The Seahawks won their first Super Bowl after the 2013 season behind the 'Legion of Boom' secondary, one of the most punishing defenses of its era, and added a second by defeating New England in Super Bowl LX in February 2026. Seattle's home crowd, nicknamed the '12s,' has twice set official world records for stadium crowd noise and is credited with forcing opposing offenses into costly false-start penalties on the road. Lumen Field's design, with a partial roof that traps and amplifies sound, was built deliberately to reinforce that home-field advantage on the city's waterfront.
