About Epsom Derby 2027

The Derby — the most famous Flat race in the world and the middle leg of the English Triple Crown — is run over a mile and a half at Epsom Downs in Surrey on Saturday 5 June 2027. First run in 1780, the Derby is the ultimate test of the three-year-old thoroughbred, watched by huge crowds on the Downs and by millions more around the globe. Epsom sits on the edge of London, so you can stay in the Surrey towns nearby — Epsom, Sutton or Kingston — for a short hop to the course, or base yourself in central London and take the train out for the day. Book early: Derby day is one of the great occasions of the English summer.

History

The Derby was first run in 1780, growing out of a celebration the year before that marked the first running of the Oaks Stakes at Epsom. A new race for three-year-olds was planned, and by tradition its name was settled by the toss of a coin between two of the party's hosts, the 12th Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Bunbury — a charming story, though historians note it may be no more than legend, and that Bunbury, as Steward of the Jockey Club, most likely deferred to his host regardless. Bunbury had the last word in a different way: Diomed, the colt he owned, won that first Derby. The name has since been borrowed by dozens of other races around the world, from the Kentucky Derby onwards, but Epsom's race, over a mile and a half of demanding downland turf, remains the original.

Records & quirks

Lester Piggott's nine Derby wins, between 1954 and 1983, are a record nobody has come within three of matching.
The previous record of six wins was shared by Jem Robinson and Steve Donoghue.
The course drops around 150 feet from the top of the hill to Tattenham Corner before the run-in.
