Bad Soden am Taunus is a former spa town at the southern foot of the Taunus hills, built on mineral springs that drew a steady stream of nineteenth-century cure guests, among them the composer Felix Mendelssohn. Today it is a well-heeled, leafy commuter town of around 21,000 people in Frankfurt's orbit, and the old spa character survives mainly in the Kurpark, its historic spring fountains and a handful of handsome villas from the town's heyday.
It works well as a calmer, greener base for business in Frankfurt: S-Bahn trains run to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, and Frankfurt Main Airport is a short drive away. This is a quiet residential place rather than a destination in itself, evenings are sleepy, and anyone wanting nightlife, museums or a big-city buzz will end up commuting into Frankfurt anyway. The reward is walking trails into the Taunus on your doorstep and noticeably calmer streets than the city. Stay near the Kurpark and the station, where you get the prettiest part of town and the easiest train link into Frankfurt.
