Bottrop is a working Ruhr city that built its identity on coal. The Prosper-Haniel colliery here was Germany's last hard-coal mine when it closed in 2018, and the city now turns that heritage into attractions. The Tetraeder, a walkable steel pyramid on top of a former slag heap, gives broad views across the industrial landscape. Another spoil tip hosts the Alpincenter, an indoor ski slope, and in the northern district of Kirchhellen, Movie Park Germany draws families from across the region.

The most rewarding stop is the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat, honouring the Bottrop-born artist in a small, well-designed space. Be honest: the centre is compact, largely rebuilt after the war and not especially charming, and few people stay here for more than a night or two. Bottrop works best as a base for exploring the wider Ruhr, with Essen and Oberhausen close by. Stay near the city centre for the museum and transport links, or in Kirchhellen if Movie Park is the reason for your trip.
