Munich is Bavaria's polished capital and leans into it: the neo-Gothic New Town Hall on Marienplatz stages a mechanical Glockenspiel show, the Hofbraeuhaus has poured beer near the square since 1605, and every autumn Oktoberfest fills the Theresienwiese as it has for over two centuries. The vast English Garden is one of Europe's largest city parks, complete with a standing wave on the Eisbach where surfers queue year-round, and the art galleries of the Kunstareal are first-rate.
The catch is cost: Munich is Germany's most expensive city, and rooms and restaurants price accordingly. It can also feel buttoned-up next to Berlin. Stay in the Altstadt around Marienplatz for the sights and beer halls, or the Glockenbach quarter for restaurants and a livelier evening.
