Champagney is a small industrial town in Haute-Saône best known for a genuine historical footnote: in 1789 its residents were among the very few in France to include an explicit condemnation of slavery in their cahier de doléances, a stance now marked by the Maison de la Négritude et des Droits de l'Homme. Otherwise there is little to detain visitors in the town itself, and most people passing through are here for what's nearby rather than Champagney proper.
The real draw is a few kilometres away in Ronchamp, home to Le Corbusier's Notre-Dame-du-Haut chapel, one of the twentieth century's most influential pieces of religious architecture. Be honest: this is a functional base rather than a destination, with a small, plain hotel selection geared to business travellers and industrial visitors rather than tourists. Stay in Champagney itself only if you're specifically visiting the chapel or the Maison de la Négritude; otherwise nearby Belfort offers more choice and a livelier evening scene.
