Staying in Grandcamp-Maisy

Grandcamp-Maisy is a working fishing port on the Normandy coast, best known for scallops landed by its fleet and for its position between Omaha and Utah beaches, which makes it a practical base for the D-Day sites. Pointe du Hoc, where US Rangers scaled the cliffs in June 1944, is a short drive east, and the town has its own Rangers museum and the remains of the German Maisy Battery just inland. The harbour gives the place a genuine, unpolished character, with fish stalls and seafood restaurants that cater as much to locals as to visitors.

This is a small village of under two thousand people, the shoreline is rocky and tidal rather than a classic sandy beach, and outside the summer and anniversary season it can feel very quiet, with limited choice for dining and only a handful of places to sleep. Stay near the harbour and seafront, where you are within walking distance of the restaurants and on the coast road to the landing beaches.
