Staying in Saumur
Saumur sits on the Loire in the heart of the valley's wine and château country, its own fairy-tale castle looming white above the town and the river. It's best known for sparkling wine made in the traditional method, for the Cadre Noir cavalry school that still trains riders in classical dressage, and for tuffeau limestone buildings that give the whole town a pale, uniform glow.
Saumur itself is small and quiet, with limited nightlife, and works better as a base for exploring than as a destination that holds you for days on end. Château de Montsoreau and its contemporary art museum make an easy day trip downriver, adding a jolt of the modern to an otherwise resolutely medieval landscape. Stay near the old town by the château for walkable access to the river, the wine cellars carved into the hillside, and the best restaurants.
