Cowes sits at the mouth of the River Medina on the Isle of Wight and is, plainly, a sailing town: chandlers, sailmakers and yacht clubs line its narrow High Street, and in early August Cowes Week fills the Solent with hundreds of racing yachts and the town with their crews.
The Red Jet foot ferry from Southampton lands you in the middle of it; a floating bridge connects East Cowes across the river. Cowes Week beds go extremely early — book months out or accept a base in Newport, ten minutes inland, or Ryde along the coast. Outside regatta season it's a pleasant, salty little town for a weekend.
