Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland, granted city rights in 1220, and it still feels like a working river town rather than a museum piece. It sits on an island where the Oude Maas, Merwede and Noord rivers meet, and the old harbours are lined with merchant houses, leaning facades and moored barges. The Grote Kerk, with its squat unfinished tower, dominates the skyline, and the Dordrechts Museum holds a solid collection of Dutch painting, including local son Aelbert Cuyp.
It is also the jumping-off point for the Biesbosch, one of the largest freshwater tidal wetlands in Europe, and a short hop from the Kinderdijk windmills. Be honest: beyond the historic core the city is fairly ordinary commuter territory for Rotterdam, nightlife is modest, and the hotel choice is limited, so it suits a quiet base or a day-trip stop more than a lively city break. Stay in the old centre around the Voorstraat and the harbours, where everything worth seeing is within easy walking distance.
