Staying in Delft
Delft is the Vermeer town: cobbled canals, gabled brick facades and the Nieuwe Kerk spire looking out over a market square that hasn't changed much in feel since the seventeenth century, when the painter and the Delftware potteries made the city's name. That blue-and-white pottery tradition is still very much a going concern, with factory tours and shops trading heavily on the heritage, alongside the Vermeer Centre and the old churches where House of Orange royals are buried.
Be honest: Delft is compact and can feel done within a day, and it gets flooded with day-trippers from The Hague and Rotterdam between roughly ten and four, so evenings and mornings are when it actually feels lived-in. It's close to Rotterdam The Hague Airport, making it a workable base for flying in and out without staying in a bigger city.
