Staying in Dresden
Dresden is a Baroque city rebuilt from ash: the Frauenkirche, left as a heap of rubble for decades after the February 1945 firebombing, was reconstructed stone by numbered stone and reopened in 2005, its darker original blocks still visible in the sandstone. Around it the Altstadt gathers the Zwinger palace, the Semperoper opera house and the Old Masters gallery in a riverside skyline that earned the nickname Florence on the Elbe.
Cross the river to the Neustadt for a scruffier, younger quarter of bars, street art and independent shops. Be clear-eyed about it: much of what looks centuries old is careful post-war and post-1990 reconstruction, and the crowds thicken around the big sights. Stay in the Altstadt for the palaces and river, or the Neustadt for nightlife and cheaper rooms.
