The old town was flattened in the war and only partially rebuilt with the reconstructed Römerberg square, so this is a city for business and transit more than romance. Its real strength is connectivity — Frankfurt Main Airport is one of Europe's busiest hubs, and the central station puts the rest of Germany within a few hours by rail. Stay near the Hauptbahnhof or the Messe district if you're here for a fair or a short connection; the old town is better for an evening stroll than a base.
