Genoa is a working port city with one of Europe's largest medieval old towns — a maze of narrow caruggi alleys where laundry hangs between faded palazzi, and the birthplace of pesto. It is grittier and less polished than Florence or Venice, which is much of its appeal, along with the Palazzi dei Rolli, the harbourside aquarium and cheap, excellent focaccia.
