Staying in Como
Como sits at the southern tip of Lake Como, and the town itself is the practical gateway to the lake rather than its prettiest corner — that title goes to Bellagio or Varenna, a short ferry ride away. What Como has instead is a genuine working town with a fine Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, a functicular up to Brunate for lake views, and centuries of silk-manufacturing history that still shows in its shops.
The waterfront can feel more businesslike than romantic, with commuter trains and lakeside traffic rather than pure holiday calm, and in high season it gets crowded with day-trippers heading to the ferries. It's well connected by rail to Milan, which makes it useful as a base even for those visiting other lake towns. Stay near the historic centre by Piazza Cavour for easy walking to the lakefront and direct access to ferries and trains.
