Como sits at the southern tip of Lake Como, and the town itself is the practical gateway to the lake rather than its prettiest corner — that title goes to Bellagio or Varenna, a short ferry ride away. What Como has instead is a genuine working town with a fine Romanesque-Gothic cathedral, a functicular up to Brunate for lake views, and centuries of silk-manufacturing history that still shows in its shops.
