Staying in Giza
Giza exists, for most visitors, as a single reason: the Great Pyramid of Giza and its companion pyramids sit on the plateau here, with the Great Sphinx crouched below, and no photograph prepares you for how close the monuments now sit to a sprawling, traffic-choked city of over two million. Giza itself is largely an extension of Cairo's urban mess, not a resort town, and the famous view of pyramids rising straight out of desert sand is increasingly framed by apartment blocks and tour buses.
Saqqara, with its older step pyramid, makes an easy add-on day trip for anyone who wants to go deeper than the main plateau. Cairo International Airport is a manageable drive away, so Giza works well as a first or last stop on an Egypt itinerary rather than a long base. Stay at one of the hotels directly facing the plateau on the Pyramids Road side, where rooftop pyramid views justify paying a bit more than you would in central Cairo.
