Hattingen sits in the Ruhr valley but doesn't look the part: its Altstadt is one of the best-preserved half-timbered old towns in western Germany, a genuine surprise given the heavy industry all around it. That contrast is the whole point of visiting. The old ironworks at Henrichshütte, now an industrial museum, tells the region's steel-and-coal story properly, and Hattingen makes a sensible, quieter base for exploring the Ruhr than staying in Essen or Bochum proper.
Be honest: this is a small town of under 60,000 people, not a destination with much nightlife or a deep restaurant scene, and our catalog here reflects that with only a dozen hotels to choose from. Most visitors are day-trippers or cyclists on the Ruhrtal route rather than long-stay tourists. Stay in or right on the edge of the Altstadt itself, since the town's main appeal is walkable and there's little reason to base yourself further out.
