Staying in Kaysersberg
Kaysersberg is one of the prettiest stops on the Alsace Wine Route, a fortified medieval town of half-timbered houses and a ruined castle above the vineyards, best known as the birthplace of Albert Schweitzer and as the sort of place that regularly gets voted France's favourite village. The old bridge over the Weiss, the cobbled main street and the surrounding Riesling and Gewürztraminer slopes make it genuinely worth the detour, not just a coach-tour photo stop.
Be honest: with under 3,000 residents it's tiny, shuts down early outside peak season, and in summer the centre fills with day-trippers from Colmar, 12 km away, which can undercut the quiet-village feel it trades on. We list seven hotels here, so choice is limited rather than abundant. Book well ahead for harvest season and Christmas, when its market is one of the region's best known. Stay in the old centre itself rather than the outskirts, so you get the timbered-street views at dawn before the buses arrive.
