Staying in Kidderminster
Kidderminster built its name on carpets. Through the nineteenth century this Worcestershire town was among Britain's great carpet-weaving centres, and the Museum of Carpet, set in an old Victorian mill, tells that story well. Today it works mostly as a practical base for the surrounding countryside rather than a destination in itself. The Severn Valley Railway's heritage steam line starts here and runs along the river through Bewdley towards Bridgnorth. West Midlands Safari Park sits just outside town, and the Wyre Forest offers easy walking.
The town centre is cut off by a tight ring road and has suffered from shop closures, so few visitors linger once the mill-era buildings and canal towpath along the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal are done. Day trips reach further than you might expect, with Dudley Castle and its zoo a straightforward drive into the Black Country. Stay near the railway station, where you can walk to the steam trains and catch mainline services to Birmingham.
Typical weather
