Staying in Kingscourt
Kingscourt is a small market town in the far south-east corner of County Cavan, close to the borders with Meath and Monaghan, and it makes no pretence of being a tourist town. It is a working place, long associated with gypsum mining and plasterboard manufacturing, with a single main street of shops, pubs and churches serving the surrounding farmland. The real draw sits just outside town: Dún a Rí Forest Park, a wooded glen along the River Cabra with easy walking trails, old estate ruins and enough quiet to justify a night or two.
The wider drumlin countryside is good for lake fishing and slow drives. There is little to fill an evening beyond a pint and a meal, public transport is limited, and you will want a car to get anywhere, including Dublin, which is roughly an hour and a half away. Stay close to the town centre if you want to walk to pubs and restaurants, or out towards Dún a Rí if the forest is your reason for coming.
