La Clusaz sits in the Aravis massif of Haute-Savoie, a proper Alpine village rather than a purpose-built resort, with a working farming heritage still visible in its Reblochon cheese cooperatives and Tuesday market. The skiing is genuinely good — a large linked domain shared with Le Grand-Bornand, varied terrain, and a ski-de-fond tradition that produced several French Olympic champions from this valley alone.
It stays largely French: fewer international crowds than Chamonix or the Trois Vallées, which means better prices but also less English spoken and a shorter high-season window outside Christmas and February half-term. Be honest: the village centre gets congested with day-trip traffic on weekends, and low-altitude snow reliability has become an issue in warmer years. Summer brings hiking, paragliding and the Tour de France when it passes through, so this isn't purely a winter one-season town. Stay close to the central church and cable-car base for walk-to-lift convenience without needing a car.
