Staying in Avignon
Avignon owes its outsized historical weight to a fourteenth-century accident of politics: when the papacy relocated here from Rome, it left behind the Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic palace in Europe and still the city's defining sight. Ramparts encircle the old town almost completely, giving Avignon a walled, self-contained feel that's rare this far north of the Mediterranean proper.
The Pont Saint-Bénézet, the "broken bridge" of the nursery rhyme, adds a second must-see, though both sights get swamped with coach tours and July's theatre festival crowds the entire centre for weeks. Be honest: outside festival season and peak summer, the town can feel sleepy, and the modern outskirts beyond the walls are unremarkable. With around 90,000 residents, it's compact enough to walk everywhere. Stay inside the ramparts near the Palais des Papes, so you're within walking distance of everything worth seeing.
