Staying in Cassis
Cassis is the fishing port at the western end of the Calanques, the string of limestone fjords between Marseille and La Ciguadière that draw hikers, kayakers and boat-trip crowds through the summer months. The town itself is small and genuinely pretty, with a pastel harbour, a hilltop chateau ruin, and a long tradition of white wine from the vineyards terraced into the cliffs above it. Be honest: in July and August it is overrun, parking is close to impossible, and the calanques themselves get access restrictions or closures when fire risk is high, so this isn't a spontaneous drop-in destination in peak season.
Out of season it's a different, quieter place, and still one of the better bases on this coast for walking and swimming rather than nightlife. We only list nine hotels here, reflecting the town's size, so book ahead regardless of month. Stay as close to the port as you can manage; you'll be walking everywhere, and the calanques trailheads are a short walk or petit train ride from there.
