Laxey is a small former mining village on the Isle of Man's east coast, known almost entirely for the Laxey Wheel: the Great Laxey Wheel, built in 1854 to pump water from the lead mines, remains the largest working waterwheel in the world and the reason most visitors turn up at all. Beyond that single landmark, there's a modest harbour, a scattering of Victorian terraces climbing the glen, and a stop on the Manx Electric Railway that makes it an easy day trip from Douglas or Ramsey rather than a destination in its own right.

Be honest: with a population under two thousand and only six hotels listed here, options are limited and evenings are quiet, with little in the way of nightlife or varied dining. It works best as a base if you want the Wheel, the glen walks and the Snaefell Mountain Railway on your doorstep rather than staying in Douglas. Stay close to the harbour or main village centre, near the railway stop, so you're within walking distance of the Wheel and can reach Douglas easily without a car.
