Leipzig carries serious history for its size: Johann Sebastian Bach spent his last 27 years as cantor at the Thomaskirche, where he is buried, and it was the Monday peace prayers at the Nikolaikirche that swelled into the 1989 demonstrations that helped bring down the GDR.
On the edge of town the colossal Monument to the Battle of the Nations marks the 1813 defeat of Napoleon, and the old Baumwollspinnerei cotton mill has become the studios and galleries behind the New Leipzig School of painting. Locals half-joke about Hypezig, and the buzz is real, though the centre is workaday in stretches and the sights are spread out. Stay near the Markt for the churches and museums, or in the Suedvorstadt along Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse for bars and food.
