Ludwigshafen am Rhein is a working industrial city first and foremost. It was founded in the nineteenth century as a Bavarian river port facing Mannheim across the Rhine, and it is still defined by BASF, whose sprawling chemical complex along the riverbank is one of the largest in the world. Most visitors come for business with the company or its suppliers, and the hotel market reflects that, with weekday demand and quieter weekends. Be honest: wartime bombing and hasty post-war rebuilding left a centre dominated by concrete and traffic infrastructure, and the city regularly lands on lists of Germany's least attractive places.
It has genuine compensations, though, including the modern art collection of the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum, the riverside Rhein-Galerie and the Parkinsel green space. It is also an easy base for the vineyards of the Palatinate wine route, Speyer's cathedral and Heidelberg. Former chancellor Helmut Kohl famously made his home in the Oggersheim district. Stay in the centre near the Rhine and the Rhein-Galerie, where trams cross directly into Mannheim and regional trains reach the wine villages.
