Hotels in Magelang

Magelang is a small Central Java city best known as the practical base for visiting Borobudur, the ninth-century Buddhist temple that draws travellers from across the world and sits just outside town. The city itself is unremarkable by design: a quiet market town ringed by volcanoes, with modest colonial-era streets and little in the way of standalone attractions beyond serving as a staging point.

Most visitors aren't here for Magelang itself but for early access to Borobudur before the tour buses and heat arrive, so expect a functional rather than charming stay. The upside is affordability and proximity, since Yogyakarta accommodation costs more and adds an hour or more of travel time each way. Stay near the Borobudur temple complex itself if you want to catch sunrise there without a long pre-dawn drive; stay in central Magelang if you just need a cheap, convenient overnight stop.
