Staying in Mataram
Mataram is Lombok's capital and the administrative centre of West Nusa Tenggara: a working city of around 320,000 people rather than a holiday destination, and most visitors pass through on the way to Senggigi, the Gili Islands or Mount Rinjani. It is predominantly Muslim and Sasak, a character announced by the towering Islamic Center mosque, but it also carries a strong Balinese Hindu legacy from the centuries when Bali ruled western Lombok, visible in the Mayura Water Palace and the Pura Meru temple in Cakranegara.
The old port district of Ampenan keeps faded colonial-era shopfronts and Chinese and Arab merchant history. There is no beach life to speak of, sights can be covered in a day, and traffic and heat make wandering less appealing than in Lombok's coastal towns. Lombok International Airport lies to the south near Praya, so Mataram works best as a practical overnight stop for errands, ferries or onward connections. Stay around Cakranegara or the central Jalan Pejanggik area for the easiest access to markets, malls and transport.
