Its headline sight is Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, the water temple that seems to float on the lake and one of Bali's most photographed images.
The Bali Botanic Garden spreads over the slopes nearby with orchids, ferns and forest walks, and the road north twists past the Gitgit Waterfall on its way toward the coast. Be honest: this is not a beach or nightlife base, the weather turns grey and drizzly with little warning, and the temple fills with tour buses from mid-morning. Nights are genuinely chilly, so bring a layer. Stay around Candikuning near the lake, so you can reach the temple and botanic garden early, before the day-trippers arrive.
