Staying in Mannheim
Mannheim is a working city rather than a postcard one: an industrial and commercial hub where the Rhine meets the Neckar, with the chemical works of Ludwigshafen just across the river. Its centre is laid out as a rare grid, the "Quadrate", where blocks carry letter-and-number addresses like C4 or P7 instead of street names, which baffles visitors for about an hour and then becomes oddly convenient. The baroque palace, one of Europe's largest and now home to the university, and the Art Nouveau Wasserturm on Friedrichsplatz are the standout sights.
The city also claims real firsts: Karl Drais rode his two-wheeled running machine here in 1817, and Carl Benz built his motorwagen here. Be honest: heavy wartime bombing left much of the centre rebuilt in plain postwar style, and few people come for a romantic weekend. Most visitors are here for business, trade fairs or the excellent rail connections, with Heidelberg a short train ride away. Stay in the Quadrate between the main station and the Wasserturm, where you can walk to the shops, restaurants and trains.
