Staying in Masevaux
Masevaux is a small Alsatian town at the mouth of the Doller valley, where the plain around Mulhouse gives way to the forested slopes of the southern Vosges. It grew up around an abbey said to date back to the eighth century, and the old centre still has the feel of a former abbey town, with squares lined by solid eighteenth-century houses and a church known for its organ and the concerts held there.
Most visitors come for what lies upstream: walking and cycling routes along the valley, the lakes of Sewen and Alfeld, and the climb toward the Ballon d'Alsace, which draws hikers in summer and modest skiing in winter. Be honest: this is a quiet place of a few thousand people, evenings are early, dining options are limited, and you will want a car to make the most of the area. With only a handful of hotels, booking ahead matters in high season. Stay in or near the old town centre so you can walk to cafés and shops and still drive straight up the valley.
