Mellieħa sits on Malta's northern tip, a hilltop village that's become the island's main base for beach holidays largely because it has what the rest of Malta lacks: Golden Bay and Mellieħa Bay, proper sandy stretches rather than the rocky coves typical elsewhere on the island. The old town itself is small, around 6,000 people, with a parish church and steep streets worth a wander, but it's not a destination for culture or nightlife — that's Valletta and Sliema's job.

Be honest: it's a fair drive from Malta International Airport and from the main sights in the south, so you're trading convenience for beach access and quiet evenings. It works well for families and anyone prioritising sand and sea over bars and museums, less well if you want to be near the capital after dark.
