Hotels in Montbéliard

Montbéliard sits in eastern France near the Swiss and German borders, a small city of around 29,000 people best known as the historic seat of the House of Württemberg and, more recently, as the industrial heart of Peugeot's automobile empire — the Sochaux plant just outside town has shaped the local economy for over a century. The old town has genuine character: half-timbered houses, a Protestant-influenced streetscape unusual for France, and a lively Christmas market that draws visitors from Switzerland and Germany each winter.

Be honest: outside of that market season and the odd Peugeot-related business trip, there's not much drawing leisure tourists here, and the city can feel quiet and functional rather than charming. It works well as a base for exploring the Doubs valley or nearby Switzerland, and is a practical overnight stop rather than a destination in itself. Stay in the old town centre, close to the Château des Ducs de Wurtemberg, for easy walking access to what sights and restaurants there are.
