Naples claims to have invented pizza itself: by 1807 the city already had 54 registered pizzerias, and pizza Margherita was reputedly created here in 1889 for the visiting queen, its tomato, mozzarella and basil topping mirroring the Italian flag. The old centre, Spaccanapoli, is a UNESCO-listed tangle of narrow lanes splitting the city like a knife, lined with churches and street-food stalls.
Vesuvius looms over the bay, and Pompeii, buried by its eruption in the year 79 and rediscovered in 1748, is a short train ride away. Be honest: the historic centre is chaotic, noisy and rundown in patches, closer to gritty than picture-postcard. Stay near Spaccanapoli or the centro storico for pizzerias and easy trains out to Pompeii.
