Hotels in Sorrento

Sorrento sits on cliffs above the Bay of Naples, not on the Amalfi Coast itself, but its harbour is the easiest way to reach it: ferries run to Positano, Amalfi and Capri, and trains reach Pompeii and Naples direct. Limoncello was refined here from the coast's thick-skinned lemons, and small producers still make it by hand much as they did a century ago.

The historic centre, Piazza Tasso and the lemon-scented lanes around Via San Cesareo, is genuinely pretty, if packed solid with cruise-ship day-trippers by mid-morning. Getting between the clifftop town and the marinas below means plenty of steps or a queue for the lift. Stay near Piazza Tasso for the ferry terminal and the evening passeggiata.
