Staying in Nicolosi

Nicolosi is the main gateway town for climbing Mount Etna, sitting on the volcano's southern flank at around 700 metres, and its whole economy runs on that fact: mountain guides, ski-and-hike outfitters, and shops selling volcanic-rock souvenirs line the streets. It's a genuine working town rather than a resort, so don't expect polish — the centre is modest, low-rise and functional, built for people gearing up for or coming down from the crater rather than lingering over aperitivo.

Winters bring a small ski scene on Etna's slopes, while summer and autumn are prime time for guided treks to the summit craters and lava fields. There's little to do in Nicolosi itself once you've sorted your Etna trip, and evenings are quiet. It's roughly 25 minutes from Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, making it an easy add-on to a Catania stay rather than a standalone destination.
