Staying in Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is the Inca town that never stopped being one: cobbled streets, water channels and stone foundations laid out in the fifteenth century still form the working core of the place, with families living behind original Inca doorways. It's the last major settlement before the Inca Trail proper and the usual boarding point for the train to Aguas Calientes, so most people pass through rather than linger.
That's a mistake — the terraced fortress above town is one of the most impressive Inca sites outside Machu Picchu itself, and it's far less crowded at dawn than anything in the Sacred Valley by mid-morning. At over 2,800 metres it's cold at night and short on nightlife or restaurant variety, and with only around 2,000 residents, the town shuts down early. Stay in the old town itself, within walking distance of the ruins and the plaza, rather than out near the highway, so you can see the fortress lit up in the evening once the day-trip crowds have gone.
