Hotels in Ottobeuren

Ottobeuren is a small market town in the Bavarian Allgäu that exists, for most visitors, because of one building: the Benedictine abbey founded in 764 and its basilica, completed in 1766 to designs by Johann Michael Fischer. It is one of the high points of German Baroque, enormous and white-and-gold inside, and its historic organs anchor a concert season that draws serious music lovers. The town is also Kneipp country, since the water-cure priest Sebastian Kneipp was born in the village of Stephansried, now part of Ottobeuren, and that heritage still shapes the local spa and wellness offer.

Be honest: beyond the abbey and some gentle countryside walking and cycling, there is not much to fill more than a day or two, evenings are very quiet, and getting around without a car takes planning. Memmingen Allgäu Airport (FMM) is a short drive away, which makes Ottobeuren a calm, inexpensive-feeling base for budget flights into southern Bavaria. Stay in the centre near the abbey and Marktplatz so the basilica, cafés and concerts are all within walking distance.
