Ramallah is the de facto capital of the Palestinian Authority, a hill town of cafes, cultural centres and government offices rather than a conventional tourist stop. It's known for a relatively liberal nightlife and dining scene by regional standards, and for the Muqata compound holding Yasser Arafat's mausoleum. The city has no headline sights of its own, and reaching Jerusalem's landmarks—Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Yad Vashem—means crossing an Israeli checkpoint, with delays that can vary a lot depending on the political situation.
