Saint Davids is technically a city, Britain's smallest, thanks to a cathedral tucked into a hollow below a village-sized centre of stone cottages and craft shops. That cathedral, and the ruined Bishop's Palace beside it, is the reason to come: a genuinely beautiful medieval site founded on the spot where the patron saint of Wales supposedly established a monastic settlement in the sixth century.
Beyond that, this is a base for the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and its beaches — Whitesands and the cliffs around St Non's Bay are the draw for walkers, surfers and birdwatchers heading out to Ramsey Island. Be honest: with a population under two thousand, there's little in the way of nightlife or big-city comforts, and options thin out fast outside the cathedral quarter.
