Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle sits at the foot of the Ballon d'Alsace in the Vosges, and it functions almost entirely as a base for that mountain: skiing in winter at the local Ballon d'Alsace and Rouge Gazon stations, hiking and cycling (this is Tour de France col territory) in summer. It's a genuine village of around 1,500 people rather than a resort built for tourism, so don't expect much beyond the outdoor activity itself — nightlife and restaurant choice are thin, and things go quiet outside the main seasons.
