Staying in Superior
Superior is the Wisconsin half of the Twin Ports, sitting across the St. Louis Bay from Duluth at the far western tip of Lake Superior. It is a working port town first, built on shipping iron ore, coal and grain out of one of the busiest harbors on the Great Lakes, and the grain elevators, ore docks and freighters still define the waterfront. Visitors come for the lake: Wisconsin Point's long sandy spit and lighthouse, Barker's Island and its museum whaleback freighter, the SS Meteor, and easy access to the North Shore and the Brule River country.
Superior is plainer and more industrial than Duluth, which has most of the restaurants, nightlife and scenic hillside views, and many people simply cross the bridge for an evening out. Winters are long, cold and snowy, and lake-effect weather can linger into spring. Stay near Barker's Island or along the main highway corridor for quick bridge access to Duluth and an easy drive out to the lakeshore.
