Staying in Tewkesbury
Tewkesbury is a small Gloucestershire market town at the meeting of the Severn and Avon, and it is defined by Tewkesbury Abbey, a vast Norman church that townspeople bought from the Crown at the Dissolution to save it as their parish church. Around it the town keeps one of England's best runs of medieval timber-framed buildings, threaded with narrow alleys running back from the main streets. History buffs come for the 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury, a decisive Wars of the Roses clash fought just south of the centre and re-enacted at the town's annual medieval festival.
The rivers that make it pretty also make it flood-prone, as the widely shared 2007 images of the abbey marooned in floodwater showed. It is also a quiet place with a small hotel stock and early evenings, better for a night or two than a long stay, though the M5 makes it an easy base for the Cotswolds and Malverns. Stay in the old centre around Church Street and the High Street to be within a short walk of the abbey, riverside and pubs.
