Thann sits at the southern end of the Route des Vins d'Alsace, where the Vosges foothills drop into the plain, and it makes its living on that geography: hiking and cycling routes into the hills, vineyards producing the Rangen grand cru on the steep slope right above town, and a genuinely striking Gothic collegiate church, St-Thiébaut, whose carved portal is worth the detour alone.

The old centre is small and easy to walk in an afternoon, with half-timbered houses and the ruined Engelbourg castle (the "Eye of the Witch") on the hill behind it. Be honest: this is a modest town, not a destination in itself, and evenings are quiet once the restaurants close. It works best as a low-key base for wine touring or Vosges walking rather than a multi-day stop. Stay in the old town centre, close to the church, so you can walk to dinner and the vineyard paths without needing a car.
