Uhldingen-Mühlhofen is a small Lake Constance municipality on the German northern shore, strung together from the lakeside village of Unteruhldingen and the quieter inland districts of Oberuhldingen and Mühlhofen. Its big draw is the Pfahlbaumuseum, an open-air reconstruction of prehistoric stilt-house villages built out over the water and tied to the UNESCO-listed pile dwellings around the Alps. On the hill above sits the Birnau pilgrimage church, a lavish rococo interior with sweeping views over vineyards and the lake.

Boats from the Unteruhldingen landing make it easy to hop to Meersburg, Überlingen or the flower island of Mainau. Be honest: this is a place for families, cyclists and lake-lovers, not nightlife. Summer brings coachloads of day-trippers to the museum. Much of the village goes very quiet out of season. Main-road traffic along the shore can also be heavy at peak times. Stay in Unteruhldingen near the harbour so the boat landing, the lakeside promenade and the museum are all within an easy walk.
